The season opener is just a few days away so we might have to double these out but here is number five on our list of greatest moments of the magical season that was the 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins season. Today we're going to go back to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals between the Penguins and Capitals from CONSOL Energy Center.
Following post #6, Patric Hornqvist gave the Penguins a commanding 3-1 series lead in Game 4 and giving the Penguins a 3-1 series lead heading into Washington for Game 5. In Game 5 though, Alex Ovechkin made his first appearance of the season and despite a pretty good effort from the Penguins, the Caps held on to win 3-1.
Game 6 might go down as one of the wildest games in Penguins history. Phil Kessel absolutely rocketed one in the first past Holtby to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Then in the 2nd, Kessel scored an absolute beauty by skating hard to net on the front side of a Brooks Orpik double minor that gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead and this gif.
As Ryan Mill was announcing the Kessel goal, Carl Hagelin tipped an Olli Maatta shot from the point in just 32 seconds later and gave the Penguins a 3-0 lead. CONSOL was loud, and fans felt like a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals was inevitable. But you felt like the Penguins were playing a game of NHL 17 in where you have to give up a big lead. TJ Oshie scored a power play goal at 18:30 (and then dove after he scored) to cut the lead to 3-1. Then in the 3rd, Justin Williams wrapped a puck around the back of the net and sniped Matt Murray to cut the lead to 3-2 with 13:00 to go. As a Penguin fan, you felt doomed. Around this time is when our own @Bobbles412 ripped his towel in half.
With about 10 minutes to go, the unthinkable worst thing that could happen to the Penguins happened. Chris Kunitz threw a puck over the glass with 9:28 left. Then on the PK, Nick Bonino tried to swat a puck out of mid air and it also went over the glass for the second delay of game penalty in a minute. Then, at 12:34 of the 3rd, Ian Cole tried to clear a puck from the corner and it flew over the Penguins bench just as Chris Kunitz was coming out of the box. The Caps got another 5 on 3 for 1:04 and they capitalized this time. John Carlson sniped one from Oviland and tied it up with 6:59 to go. All you could think about was holding on to your butts. The Penguins managed to take the game into Overtime.
In Overtime, Trevor Daley beat Brayden Holtby but Jay Beagle dove out and caught the puck with his stick right on the goal line. At that point, you're thinking welp. Game 7 in Washington. But a few minutes later, HCMS got the HBK Line on the ice and they went to work. Kessel got the puck in behind the red line and found a streaking Carl Hagelin in the slot. The puck was blocked by a Capital but it laid in the crease where Nick Bonino tapped it into an empty net. Series over.
Caps gonna Cap.
Season starts in 3 days. We should have 2 posts out today to catch up.
