Carolina came out of the gates on fire to start this game like they were all jacked up about Donald Trump's Inauguration. They controlled play for the first 8 minutes or so, including a Power Play when the Tim Peel Show took over in the first 30 seconds of the game. Matt Murray made a couple of big saves and then the Penguins went to work. With about 7:30 to go in the 1st, the Canes tried to clear a puck out of their zone but Trevor Daley jumped up and caught the puck, skated to the slot and blasted a shot that would make George W. Bush proud. 1-0 Pens. It would appear the Penguins would score again in the 1st as Jake Guentzel shot a puck off of Patric Hornqvist's chest but the net came off it's moorings so no goal. Hornqvist did run into Cam Ward, so it probably would've been goalie interference anyways.
The Penguins took all of their momentum from the first period into the second and started peppering Cam Ward with shots. 7:00 into the period, they struck again when Cameron Gaunce took a quick slap shot from the point. The puck hit Carl Hagelin and it fell right to his feet and he snuck it in five hole to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Then with about 7:30 to go again, Conor Sheary got a shot off after some nice puck movement and a couple of shots. Sheary's shot hit Ward between the legs and he basically knocked the puck into the net to give the Pens a 3-0 lead. Fourteen seconds later, Chris Kunitz would picklestab a puck into the net to make it 4-0. Cam Ward was pretty upset at this point. Jeff Skinner tried to dive right after and he gave the Penguins their first power play of the night. The power play did nothing. With about 3:30 to go in the period, Jeff Skinner decided to run his mouth and they called him for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. The Penguins would cash in on this Power Play. Evgeni Malkin would find Phil Kessel on the goal line with a cross crease pass and Kessel one timed it (yes he honestly one timed one) into the back of the net to give the Penguins a 5-0 lead.
The 3rd began and you'd think the Penguins would just gain the red line and dump it in being up 5-0. 6:37 in though, that wasn't the case as they were cycling the puck. Justin Schultz dumped a puck behind the net to Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin. Malkin picked up the puck and went to the front of the net and put a harmless little shot on net. The puck somehow snuck in over Cam Ward's pad and the Penguins lead 6-0. Patric Hornqvist was causing shit in front of the net again and Ward had enough. Ward decided to start punching Hornqvist laying on the ice and he got called for being a dick. Penguins got a power play. During the Power Play, Viktor Stalberg got a breakaway and snuck one past Murray to put the Canes on the board and give us Ric Flair wooing in the background. The Penguins were pissed because of Ward so they tried to run up to score. With about 11 minutes to go, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary got a really good chance. Rust found the puck on the left side of the net and threw it to the slot where Sidney Crosby basically one touch, no look, behind the pack pass to Conor Sheary who would one time the puck into a wide open net. Chili and that would give the Pens a 7-1 lead. With 2 mins left, a puck bounced up between the benches and caught Bob Errey in the face. Game over.
