The Flames beat the Penguins for the second time this season in a shootout on a Kris Versteeg SO goal. The Penguins lost Mark Streit this game as the injuries keep piling up. With this SOL, the Penguins have tied the Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division Standings. Things are getting tight with 13 games remaining on the year. This game started with the Crosby-Sheary-Guentzel line going to work and Sid finding Sheary right in front of the net for his 20th of the year. Calgary would answer as former "friend" Deryk Engellend shot one off of Mark Streit's stick past MAF. Chris Kunitz found Evgeni Malkin for a tap in on a Power play to give the Pens a 2-1 lead going into the 2nd period. Dennis Wideman ripped one from the point early in the 2nd and it hit Nick Bonino's hand and just fluttered past everyone, including MAF who was moving out to make a glove save. In the 3rd, Johnny Gaudreau skated from Edmonton through the entire Penguins defense and the Alberta Rockies and scored a nice wrap around on MAF and it looked as the Flames were gonna get the win in regulation until Sidney Crosby somehow deflected a Conor Sheary shot past Brian Elliott. Calgary challenged but Sid hit the puck and then hit Elliot's glove so they counted it. In OT, the Penguins had a late power play but Brian Elliott made 2-3 big saves. Versteeg scored in the first round of the shootout and the Pens didn't score on any of their attempts.
