Let me take a minute to introduce myself. You have seen my twitter handle (@JPAloia55) on here before, but get used to seeing it more. I am Jordan Aloia. The POA guys have asked me to join the team and write some Gameday reports this season. So get ready for some hot takes (and maybe hotcakes). Now lets get down to business.
Welcome to the Windy City. Our 5-time Stanley Cup Champions Penguins (0-0-1, 1 pt) take on the 6-time Champions Blackhawks. It is opening night for the Blackhawks with puck drop scheduled for 8:30 PM.
Let us talk about last night. Wow. 5-4 loss in OT. That wasn't pretty. Matt Murray was like soft butter and the Blues were like a hot knife. Not the best start to the season. But, it is only one game and there are still 81 games left to go.
There were some pluses to last nights loss. Greg McKegg might be the second coming of god. Olli Maatta actually played like he knew what he was doing. Oh, and Crosby, Malkin, and Schultz all registered points for my hot start to my fantasy hockey season.
A new feature on my reports is the Aloia Studs and Duds section, where I pick my 3 stars and my 3 failures. Here we go.
3.) Greg McKegg- Keggers looked solid, displaying good puck control and looking like he actually belonged on the ice. He finished with 1 assist in just over 15 minutes of ice time.
2.) Olli Maatta-In 55 games last season Maatta had 17 points (1-16). In 16 minutes last night, he already has 2 (1-1). His goal was a beautiful slap shot from the point. He needs to have a good season or he likely will be out in Pittsburgh.
1.) Stanley Cup Banner-Number 5 looks just as sexy as number 4. Nuff said.
Matt Murray-He just didn't look comfortable in net and allowed too many rebounds.
Kris Letang-In his first game, he showed some rust. Not to worry about though.
Phil Kessel-Phil was pretty much non-existent on the ice last night. Maybe a hot dog hangover? Maybe just didn't have his best stuff last night.
*Expect Antti Niemi in net tonight*
*Lets just assume that we won't update this and the stripes will likely be bad*
-The Blackhawks are an interesting team. They have talent but the have no cap room. One or two injuries and they could be in a lot of trouble.
-The Blackhawks were give permission by the NHL to place former Penguin winger Marian Hossa on LTIR because he's legit allergic to his equipment. What a baby.
-Crosby is the better player but Toews is the better leader, REMEMBER that.
-Still waiting for that first Reaves fight.
-Murray is listed as the starter, but Niemi should start in net. With 19 back-2-back games this year, we should see Niemi 20-30 times.
-This isn't a game note, but I tracked the Penguins plane from Pittsburgh to Chicago and I was very happy.
-You know what really grinds my gears? The fact that Mike Rupp isn't full time on AT&T Sportsnet.
-Steve Mears. Lets go! Mears makes his Penguins Play-by-Play debut tonight.
-As i type this my dog Maxwell decides to get involved and sneeze all over my computer.
Do it. Go Pens.
