Times are tough, folks. The Penguins (17-15-3) are in a bad spot and it might be the most adversity Head Coach Mike Sullivan has faced since taking over the team and losing his first four games back in December of 2015. Tonight, the Penguins look to right the ship over an old rival and a team we hate dearly, the Columbus Blue Jackets (21-13-1), with puck drop scheduled for just after 7PM at PPG Paints Arena.
Following the Penguins embarrassing 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, Penguins General Manager Jim Rutherford went to work, making two minor trades and possibly setting the team up for a bigger move down the road. It started when Rutherford sent forward Josh Archibald, goaltender Sean Maguire, a 6th round pick in 2019 to the Arizona Coyotes for goaltender Michael Leighton and a 4th round pick in 2019.
Shortly after acquiring Leighton, the Penguins then added Dallas Stars defenseman, Jamie Oleksiak for a 2019 fourth round pick, AKA the pick they acquired for Archibald. Oleksiak has just three points in 21 games this season, but the guy is 6'7 and not expected to produce offensively. He's a defensive defenseman, who now with his acquisition, will make Ian Cole expendable. To me, it's clear the Penguins aren't done yet. Both Leighton and Oleksiak were depth moves which I believe will set the Penguins up for a bigger trade down the road, which I expect will involve Ian Cole in some way shape or form. Expect Oleksiak to make his Penguins debut tonight against the Blue Jackets tonight.
As for the Blue Jackets, they're pretty good this year. Though they've been a tad inconsistent this season, their record of 21-13-1 is still good for third in the Metrosexual Division and fourth in the Eastern Conference. CBJ is led by former Black Hawks forward Artemi Panarin, who has 28 points on the season (7 goals and 21 assists).
**LOL if you thought we were going to have these posted. Scouting the Refs sucks.**
The Penguins lost 4-2 to the Avalanche on Monday lol. That's not good.
With that loss, Rutherford decided to make some minor moves...
Newly acquired defenseman Jamie Oleksiak will wear #6 for the Penguins.
Goaltender Michael Leighton (from Arizona) was assigned to Wilkes-Barre Scranton.
Thank God Brandon Dubinsky will miss tonight's game with a broken orbital bone. Actually he's expected to miss another 4-5 weeks. Can't say I'm disappointed by this.
The Penguins have not been good lately lol.
Rutherford did say he hopes Justin Schultz will be back in the lineup within two weeks, which did not sound like a reasonable expectation as of last week.
Columbus is 5-5 in their last ten games and are coming off a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night.
The Penguins are 5-5 in their last ten but they've lost the last four of their last five games. Yikes.
Look for Ian Cole to sit tonight in favor of 6'7 defenseman, Jamie Oleksiak.
Hot take but with the Oleksiak and Leighton acquisitions, the Penguins might just be getting started in terms of dealing. They're still looking for that third line center.
Josh Archibald is now in hell (Arizona). So RIP his career. Make sure you send some #ThoughtsAndPrayers his way today.
Look for Boone Jenner to run Evgeni Malkin today for no reason at all. Expect Oleksiak and Reaves to become the Bash Brothers 2.0 and kill someone.
The Penguins haven't scored a power play goal in four games. Yikes.
Not sure what else to write. I feel like I've put more effort into this post than the Penguins have in their hockey games lately.
Do it. Go Pens.
