After a thrilling 5-4 shootout win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night, the Penguins (19-16-3) will look to make it two in a row when they face-off tonight against Sebastian Aho and the Carolina Hurricanes (17-12-7) with puck drop set for just after 7:30PM from PNC Arena.
Stop me if you've heard this before...the Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in a shootout. Oh wait, they did it again Wednesday night defeating the Jackets by a score of 5-4 with goals from Crosby and Malkin in the shootout. In that game however, the Penguins lost some pieces of their team. Goaltender Matt Murray is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Forward Bryan Rust was also lost to injury with his being deemed 'longer term.' To make matters worse, the Penguins also lost defenseman Chad Ruhwedel. Yesterday Letang, Rust, and Ruhwedel were placed on injured reserve, meaning they'll be out at least one week.
As corresponding moves, the Penguins announced yesterday that goaltender Casey DeSmith, defenseman Andrey Pedan (the 'Defensive Datsyuk') and forward Garrett Wilson have been recalled from Wilkes-Barre.
The Penguins next eight games are against Eastern Conference teams, with five of them being against Metrosexual Division opponents, so needless to say if they could win a few of these, it would not only be beneficial to them standings wise, but also my well-being and sanity. The Hurricanes and Penguins are currently tied in the standings, both with 41 points a piece. Carolina is coming off a 3-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday and are looking for their fourth straight win. In their last ten games, the Hurricanes are 6-2-2 while the Penguins are 4-6-0. Look for the Penguins to come out flat and probably trail early.
**Lol if you thought Scouting the Refs had the officials listed for tonight.**
Expect Tristan Jarry vs Cam Ward in net tonight. Darling is technically Carolina's number one goalie, but Ward has been playing half decent lately.
Hot take here, but remember the last time the Penguins were coming off a 'big win.' Yeah they shit the bed against Anaheim and lost 4-0. So yeah, building on Wednesday's 'big win' would be rather nice.
Letang and Murray are both traveling with the team during their three game road trip, so they could possibly be back at some point sooner rather than later.
Jake Guentzel scored his first goal in ten games Wednesday, so yeah, it'd be nice if he could do more of that.
Go figure the Penguins won without Kris Letang.
No idea what numbers Garrett Wilson and Andrey Pedan are wearing. So if you see some random ass numbers on the ice, it's likely those guys.
If you want to make a drinking game out of it, remember that Jordan Staal used to play for the Penguins. If there is a mention of him being a former Penguin, drink. You might die, but hey, it's almost New Years. End 2017 the right way.
The Hurricanes have yet to win four games in a row this season, so why not tonight?
This is the first of four meetings this season. Penguins went 4-0-0 in against the Canes last season.
I miss Jordan Staal.
