The Penguins and Oilers played a thriller Tuesday night, trading goals back and forth. The Penguins saw their goals come from Sidney Crosby (2), Patric Hornqvist (2), and Jamie Oleksiak (2). The offense appears to be picking up as Crosby and Hornqvist both tallied their first goal(s) of the season while nine other players recorded at least a point. The defense however...YIKES. Aside from Brian Dumoulin and Kris Letang, the defense pretty much sucks. I root for Jack Johnson because it makes people mad on the internet, but his play has been subpar to say the least. It also doesn't help that Johnson has been paired with Olli Maatta, who couldn't out-skate a statue but here we are. Tonight, it looks as if Johnson will be paired with Juuso Riikola which could either be really good or really bad. I'm going to go with bad. Honestly though, it's October and when you win two out of the last three Stanley Cups, you learn not to care about the regular season, at least until after the New Year.
The Penguins see Calgary maybe twice a year so knowing their roster isn't really important and it's not like they'll be anywhere near the playoffs when it's all said and done, however, they did add a few new faces this offseason. The Flames signed former Penguin winger and coke snorter James Neal to a five year $28.75M deal. Neal, a former 40 goal scorer, tallied 25 goals and 44 points last season for the Golden Knights. They also made one of the bigger trades this offseason, acquiring Hurricanes 21 year-old defenseman and former first round pick, Noah Hanifin, and forward Elias Lindholm for Dougie Hamilton, Michael Ferland, and Adam Fox. The Flames have won the last three games against the Penguins when playing at the Saddledome, including a 2-1 overtime victory last season.
