Tonight the Penguins (6-1-2) look to make it five in a row, this time against the John Tavares-less New York Islanders (5-4-1). Puck drop is set for just after 7:00PM from PPG Paints Arena.
The Penguins absolutely dominated their four game Western Canada road trip, going a perfect 4-0 and outscoring opponents 23-6. Sidney Crosby showed that he's still the best player in the league, scoring highlight reel goals in back-to-back games against Edmonton and then against Calgary. In addition, the Penguins also got solid performances in net from both Matt Murray and Casey DeSmith who combined posted a 1.49 goals against average with a .960 save percentage. If you're bad at math and stats, that's really good.
The Islanders come into town with a winning record, which is something that probably won't last long but still I'm impressed given how bad their team is on paper. The Isles have actually won their last two games and 3-1-1 over their last five games. Tonight, former Penguin Tom Kuhnhackl will make his return to Pittsburgh and play his first game against his former team. The Penguins will undoubtably show some form of tribute video for Kuhhhackl. I have no idea what that highlight reel could consist of but if it's of missing nets, turning pucks over, losing his man in coverage, and just going through the motions, I could probably come up with one hell of a highlight reel.
If you live under a rock, John Tavares is no longer an Islander. In fairness, he never did anything against the Penguins anyway so it'd be hard to notice him.
Expect Robin Lehner vs Matt Murray in goal tonight.
Evgeni Malkin is currently riding a 7 game point streak with 15 points during that stretch (4 goals, 11 assists).
Sidney Crosby was named NHL's First Star of the Week after recording 5 goals and 7 points in 3 games. That's pretty good.
No Derick Brassard again tonight, he's out with an upper-body injury.
Kris Letang listed as a game-time decision by Mike Sullivan. He suffered a lower-body injury Saturday night against the Canucks.
The Isles are 1-2-3 over their last six trips to Pittsburgh.
Islanders forward Josh Bailey has points in his team's last five games and is tied with Anders Lee for the team lead in scoring with 11 points.
Matt Martin is an Islander. I dislike him strongly.
The Penguins cancelled their annual Halloween theme night in favor of collecting donations to benefit the victims and families of Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill following the shooting that happened Saturday morning.
The Penguins will also be wearing "Stronger than Hate" patches on their jerseys tonight that will later be auctioned off to benefit the victims and their families of the Tree of Life Synagogue.
Yesterday the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also announced a $50,000 total donation to two separate charities benefiting the victims and families of the shooting.
Apparently people on Twitter still think this isn't enough and are still mad at the Penguins for going to the White House last year. If this is you, kick rocks and chug bleach.
