Following a tough overtime loss to Boston last night, the Penguins (8-8-5) will play their first back-to-back of the season against Artemi Panarin and the Columbus Blue Jackets (13-7-2). Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7pm tonight from PPG Paints Arena.
The Penguins lost in overtime last night by a score of 2-1, thanks to a Joakim Nordstrom goal making it five straight road losses. Recently recalled goaltender Tristan Jarry made his first start of the season and played rather well stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced. Patric Hornqvist was injured at some point during the second period and missed the entire third. Mike Sullivan will be speaking at 5pm but it looks like the Penguins will be without the gritty winger tonight as they've recalled forward Garrett Wilson. The Penguins are now 1-3-2 over their last six games and losing someone like Hornqvist could make that record significantly worse.
The Blue Jackets will also be playing their second game in two nights. They're coming off a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night and are 6-2-1 over their last nine games. The Jackets are led by winger Cam Atkinson, who has scored in six straight games and has 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists) during the streak. Some good news - the Blue Jackets haven't won a game against the Penguins since game four of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals way back on April 4th, 2017. The Jackets went 0-1-3 last year against the Penguins with two games being decided by a shootout. No idea what will happen in tonight's game, considering the Penguins are pretty bad right now but somehow they always manage to play well against the Jackets. I fully expect Casey DeSmith to start in net tonight for the Penguins.
Jack Johnson homecoming tonight. It'll be his first game against his former team. If they want to take him back, they can.
Never forget when Johnson buried the Blue Jackets when he signed with Pittsburgh saying, "I've been looking to be in a winning culture." Rutherford claimed he knew why Johnson was a healthy scratched last year and John Tortorella didn't like that. I was happy.
Expect an update on Patric Hornqvist soon.
Mike Sullivan is probably pissed that Derek Grant was a last minute scratch and he HAD to play Daniel Sprong. Must have just killed him inside.
Brandon Dubinsky is going to make me mad tonight.
The Penguins may luck out, considering regular season goaltending champion Sergei Bobrovsky started last night against the Leafs, they may get Joonas Korpisalo in net.
Phil Kessel has points in six straight games.
Evgeni Malkin has a five game scoring streak against CBJ, (2 goals 5 assists).
The Penguins will wear their gold third jerseys for the third time this season.
No idea what to expect for this one, but I'm ready to be hurt again.
Still poor. This meme was very popular every time we played CBJ.
Werenski faked it.
