After a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets last night, the dare I say surging Penguins (10-8-5) travel to Colorado to get hig...I mean take on the Avalanche (14-6-4). Puck drop is set for just after 9:30pm from the Pepsi Center in Denver.
Thanks to some secondary scoring, for once, the Penguins left Winnipeg with two big points in the standings. Zach Aston-Reese potted the game-winner 14:48 into the third period. If that wasn't enough to excite you, forward Derek Grant who hasn't scored since 'Nam tied the game at three and the Penguins also got a goal from center Riley Sheahan. That's right, in total three bottom six forwards recorded a goal last night. Coming into last night's game, I'm pretty sure the Penguins bottom six had contributed seven goals all season. So yes, last night was a big night for them.
While the Penguins may be hot, the Avalanche may be even hotter even though snow doesn't get hot...just go with it. Over their last eight games, the Avs are 7-0-1 and currently have the top two league leaders in points with Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. Rantanen already has 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists) while MacKinnon is not far behind him with 37 (17 goals, 20 assists). Both players have recorded multiple points in each of their last five games. The Av's power play is also hot, going a perfect 2/2 their last time out against the Predators on Tuesday and speaking of their power play, they're currently clicking at 32.1% scoring 26 power play goals in 24 games which is number one in the league. If you're new, that's pretty good.
Tonight should definitely be interesting.
If you didn't know you'll find out 6834548743537534745 times tonight, both Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon are from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.
Expect Derek Grant to play again tonight in place of Daniel Sprong.
Former Capitals backup Philipp Grubauer starts tonight for the Av's.
Tristan Jarry will start for the Penguins in net.
Pens fans will get their first look at Ian Cole this season. Let's be real, many of you still probably want him back.
No Hornqvist again tonight (concussion). He did not make the trip.
I'm starting to have hope in this team again, which is probably going to hurt me.
Sidney Crosby has six points (2 goals, 4 assists) in four games since returning from injury.
The Penguins are 3-0-2 since they forced Matt Cullen to sit down with a fake injury.
I still cannot believe Derek Grant scored a legitimate goal in the NHL last night, a big one at that.
Speaking of his goal, Daniel Sprong cemented himself to the press box, considering Sullivan loves Grant.
I miss Justin Schultz.
Speaking of which, Jack Johnson played well last night. I know that's against the narrative but it's true.
