Following an impressive 2-1 win over the Capitals last night, the inconsistent Penguins (16-12-6) will play their second of a back-to-back tonight against the Minnesota Wild (17-14-2). Puck drop is set for just after 7pm from PPG Paints Arena.
That's right a team that has lost twice to the Islanders, Devils, Canadiens, and Senators beat the Caps 2-1 in Washington last night. The win wasn't easy as the Penguins faced adversity early, losing defenseman Jamie Oleksiak for the game after he and noted ISIS supporter Tom Wilson dropped the gloves. Wilson beat the living hell out of Oleksiak to the point where it looked like he didn't know where he was. It also didn't help that the Pens gave the Caps five power plays. Luckily for the Penguins, Washington was unable to convert on a single one despite some good looks.
Last night the Penguins received goals from Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust, who were both able to keep their point streaks going. Crosby now has six points over his last four games while Rust now has six goals over his last five contests. It'll be interesting to see who the Penguins go with in net. I am a staunch supporter of playing the hot goalie and while Casey DeSmith may be hot and good (in looks too), Matt Murray is the 'franchise' goalie or so I was told. I would go back to Murray tonight following a strong performance from him last night in which he made 31 saves on 32 shots. Considering Oleksiak probably still doesn't know where he is, I think it's safe to say he'll be out of the lineup tonight. I would expect Juuso Riikola to slot in for him.
On the other side, the Wild are the definition of average. Every year they're expected to be half decent and every year they manage to disappoint. Maybe this is what happens when Bruce Boudreau leads your club? The Wild have lost two in a row and currently sit 5th in the Central Division having gone just 3-7-0 over their last ten games. Minnesota will also be without their best defenseman tonight, Matt Dumba. Dumba is expected to miss a week after suffering an upper-body injury last Saturday against the Flames. Entering tonight, he leads all defensemen in goals with 12.
This is one of those games the Penguins have found a way to lose this year so it'll be interesting to see if their 'emotional' win over Washington last night has any impact on them tonight.
Realistically it'll be probably be Devan Dubnyk vs Casey DeSmith in net tonight.
Anyone see Ovi slam his stick last night? That's what it's all about.
The Wild can take Matt Cullen back with them if they would like.
Remember when Zach Parise and Ryan Suter signed those unreal 13 year / $98M contracts way back in 2013? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
The Penguins are 4-1 at home against the Wild over their last five games.
Garrett Wilson was sent back down to Wilkes-Barre today. Don't be surprised to see Dominik Simon back in the lineup. Simon was injured back on December 4th against the Avs and hasn't played since.
It's ugly sweater night at the arena tonight so you should totally go and wear a Flyers or a Caps jersey.
If the Penguins lose this game, I will definitely be mad.
Speaking of mad, remember when Nino Niederreiter broke Olli Maatta when he hit him into an open bench? TBT.
Bruce Boudreau bathes in peanut butter.
This game is going to be boring as hell.
Video - SomeHockeyVideos - I am definitely not happy.
He looks so good in green, please take him back.
