Helllllooooooo everybodyyyy tonight the Penguins (19-12-6) face off against the Blues in St.Louis (15-16-4) seeking their fifth straight win, a feat this team has not accomplished since they swept their Western Canada trip way back in late October. Puck drop is just after 8pm from Enterprise Center, formally known as Scottrade Center.
The Penguins are on a roll, having won four straight and six of their last seven. Over the course of their win streak they've received secondary scoring and stellar goaltending. Since returning from injury on December 15th, Matt Murray has gone 4-0 with a 1.48 goals-against average and a .957 save percentage. I've checked with some sources close to me and I can confirm that those numbers are indeed very good.
Speaking of scoring, it was announced prior to Thursday's game that the Penguins locked up winger Jake Guentzel, signing him to a five year, $30m deal that runs through 2023-2024 season. Guentzel would have been a restricted free agent this offseason and honestly I was expecting him to receive more money. If you recall, Leafs forward William Nylander was a restricted free agent and voluntarily sat out until the Leafs gave him a contract near what he wanted on the day of the deadline. Guentzel is already on pace for a career best season, posting 15 goals and 18 assists through 37 games.
Despite the poor record, St. Louis is heating up. Winners of two straight including a 4-1 victory over the Sabres on Thursday night, the Blues are now 6-3-1 over their last ten games. In addition, St. Louis could get a couple of their big name players back from injury soon. Forward Robby Fabbri could return tonight, he's missed the last ten games with a shoulder injury along with defenseman Alex Pietrangelo who has been sidelined 11 games with a fractured hand.
Matt Murray will likely oppose Jake Allen in goal.
Optional morning skate today. Jamie Oleksiak did skate, however, no idea what the hell the lines and pairings will be.
Derick Brassard scored two goals in the 5-2 win over the Red Wings. That pretty much tied his season high in points.
The Blues will play their 4,000 game in franchise history tonight.
Update - Alex Pietrangelo WILL play tonight. As mentioned above, he's missed the last 11 games.
The Penguins have outscored opponents 12-4 during their four game streak.
Honestly, I don't hate the Blues so I can't say too much bad about them.
NHL 17 was an awful game. Vladimir Tarasenko was on the cover of that one. So he sucks.
The Blues are wearing their 'Heritage' jerseys tonight so that's fun.
Remember David Perron? He came here, scored in his debut against the Habs and didn't really do anything for the other 342 games he played here. Good times.
Wes McCauley show tonight.
Lol the Dallas Stars trashing their franchise players, that's pretty unreal. Imagine them trying to sign the next big free agent.
I have to go to a family Christmas party tonight and I am not happy.
Me, at this Christmas party.
