Hellllllllooooooo everybodddddddy, howwwww are yaaaaaaa? Tonight your Pittsburgh Penguins (33-22-8) take on Jeff Skinner and the Buffalo Sabres (29-26-8) in the first game of a weekend back-to-back which has the Pens traveling to Montreal tomorrow night to take on the Habs. Puck drop is set for just after 7pm from the KeyBank Center.
The Penguins are coming off an impressive 4-2 victory Tuesday night against the "all in" Columbus Blue Jackets. Of course, with one step forward, the Penguins fall two steps back. In the game, the Penguins suffered two key losses in forward Bryan Rust and defenseman Chad Ruhwedel. Rust was injured after colliding with human pylon Adam McQuaid in the first period while Ruhwedel was injured by Boone Jenner (no relation to Caitlyn) on a hit that sent his shoulder into the sun. That said, Erik Gudbranson will make his Penguins debut tonight and Zach Trotman will be the Penguins sixth defenseman. Yikes. Forward Teddy Blueger was also recalled on an emergency basis which probably really pisses Mike Sullivan off since he's actually forced to play him. Stay tuned.
The Sabres enter tonight's game looking to snap their two game losing streak. The last time out, they fell to the scumbags of Philadelphia by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday night. Buffalo is 3-6-1 over their last ten contests and after a hot start to begin the year, seem to be coming back to earth again. These two teams met once already this season back in Pittsburgh on November 19th. Buffalo overcame a three goal deficit to win 5-4 in overtime thanks to Jack Eichel.
Expect Matt Murray vs Linus Ullmark in goal tonight. Carter Hutton apparently tweaked something in practice so they're turning to their backup, which clearly always works well for the Penguins.
Mike Sullivan is forced to play Teddy Blueger tonight with the latest round of injuries. Bryan Rust is out 'longer term' with a lower-body injury.
With back-to-back games this weekend, expect Matt Murray to get the start tonight and Good Guy Casey DeSmith to go against the Canadiens tomorrow.
Justin Schultz probably has PTSD just thinking about playing in Montreal after fracturing his leg there at the beginning of the season which caused him to miss roughly four and a half months.
Conor Sheary still sucks.
Speaking of sucks, holy hell. The Sabres have a bunch of former scrub Penguins including Sheary, Matt Hunwick and Scott Wilson. Tonight, you'll get to see them all.
Erik Gudbranson makes his Penguin debut. I'm not a fan of the move but here we are. Let's hope he doesn't suck.
Speaking of which, he'll wear former scumbag Brooks Orpik's number 44.
The Pens also faceoff against Brandon Montour, who will skate alongside former Penguin legend Matt Hunwick on the third d pairing for the Sabres. Montour would have been the ideal defenseman for the Pens to target, even more so after the fact that Chad Ruhwedel's shoulder is somewhere on Pluto.
Jared McCann might be the real third line center that the Penguins needed. He has 5 goals in 13 games since being acquired from Florida.
No Letang, Dumoulin or Maatta on this trip.
Buffalo is 18-9-4 at KeyBank Center this year, so this game might be over.
Buffalo We're Talkin' Proud.
