Tonight the San Jose Sharks (3-1) come to PPG Paints Arena in what should be the exact opposite of a Stanley Cup Finals rematch. After coming off an absolutely terrible performance against the Canadiens, going 0/8 on the powerplay and getting shutout 4-0, the Penguins (2-1-1) will be without star defenseman Kris Letang and winger Conor Sheary, who both suffered injuries during that game on Tuesday.
On top of Letang and Sheary being out tonight, the Penguins still remain without star center Sidney Crosby and goaltender Matt Murray, who at least is practicing with the team now. Speaking of Matt Murray, there was a bit of news this morning as the Penguins locked up the Stanley Cup winning goaltender for three years, at $3.75M per year. Many say this is going to be the last season of Marc-Andrew Fleury in Pittsburgh to which General Manager Jim Rutherford said, "The focus seems to be on what happens with Marc-Andre. But let this play itself out first." No idea what that actually means, but it will definitely be fun watching the whole goaltending situation play out down the stretch.
With Crosby being out tonight, there's no way he can cheat on faceoffs, right @Logan Couture? As mentioned above, the Sharks are 3-1 on the season, coming off a 3-2 victory against the Islanders on Tuesday. The Sharks roster, much like the Penguins, remains largely intact from last season. The only real additions for San Jose was adding speedy winger Mikkel Boedker, and scrub defenseman David Schlemko.
As we discussed together last night, it's hard to get excited about writing Game Days like this in the regular season after writing about a Stanley Cup Final and eventually winning the Cup. In reality, every point does matter and every game is important, however it's hard to get up and get motivated to write about Game 5 of the regular season with half the Penguins lineup out. We're doing our best though. Without further adieu, here's what we project the lines to be tonight:
As mentioned above, the Penguins will be without Letang, Sheary,Crosby, and Murray tonight.
Also mentioned above, the Penguins extended (haha extended) Matt Murray this morning, three years, $3.75M per.
The best part of that contract is going to be reading your hot takes on the internet.
Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will be between the pipes for his 5th straight start tonight.
Mike Sullivan was pissed after the Penguins 4-0 loss against Montreal on Tuesday, should be interesting to see how the Penguins start off against the Sharks.
Looks like the Penguins won't be on #CondomWatch after all, especially with Matt Murray progressing daily.
Logan Couture still looks like a horse.
Never, ever forget Game Six in San Jose when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.
We put Olesky as a first line defenseman, we're joking, but seriously we don't know the lines and at this point, we doubt the Penguins do either.
P.S. (we know Oleksy isn't #69 but it's #nice)
Also, we know it's misspelled but if you play NHL 17, especially EASHL, you should get the joke.
Speaking of jersey numbers, who the hell does Melker Karlsson think he is, taking #68 on the Sharks? Last time we checked, only legends (AKA Jagr and @bobbles412 on NHL 17) could wear that number.
It's going to be awesome watching this game and not being nervous and fearing that the Penguins might lose the Stanley Cup and breaking down in front of everyone thinking that your life is over, or was that just me?
In all honestly, look for Derrick Pouliot in the starting lineup tonight, woof.
