After a long four day break, the Penguins (41-26-5) are back in action again tonight against Mathew Barzal and the New York Islanders (30-32-10), with faceoff set for just after 7:00PM from an arena in which the jumbotron is not even centered, the Barclays Center.
The Penguins have ten games remaining in the 2017-2018 season and trail the Washington Capitals by just two points for first place in the Metrosexual Division. Not that I particularly care about where the Penguins finish standings wise going into the playoffs, but they could definitely get a much needed boost to their lineup tonight. Goaltender Matt Murray "will be an option in goal", per Head Coach Mike Sullivan. Murray has missed the last nine games with a concussion. In his absence the Penguins have gone 5-3-1. Speaking of absent goaltenders, Tristan Jarry was optioned to Wilkes-Barre yesterday, making Casey DeSmith the official backup, and likely the backup during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. *Gulp.*
Earlier this season, the Islanders looked pretty good at hockey. Since then, they've been very bad and will likely miss the playoffs. At one point this season, the Islanders record was 29-26-5. Let's flip the switch to today and check the Islanders record --- 30-32-10. Yikes. Over their last 12 games, the Isles are 1-7-4, which if you're keeping score at home is not very good. Last week the Islanders played a home and home series with the Washington Capitals and got their asses beat twice, losing the first game 7-3 and the second game 6-3.
While tonight's game seems winnable, keep in mind the Penguins blew two leads to the god awful New York Rangers last week. The Islanders also have a potential Calder Trophy winner on their team, Mathew Barzal. In 72 games this season, Barzal has 19 goals and 54 assists for a total of 73 points. That's pretty good. Barzal is so good that Islanders coach Doug Weight put John Tavares on his line, playing wing. Buckle up.
No morning skate this morning, expect Mike Sullivan to address the media at 5:00PM today.
Expect Matt Murray in between the pipes tonight, he's missed the last three weeks with a concussion.
Carter Rowney is out 'longer term' with an upper-body injury. Zach Aston-Reese is slowly getting healthy and I am a fan.
In the meantime, forward Josh Jooris was recalled on an emergency basis. Anyone is better than Carter Rowney. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Penguins are 15-18-4 on the road, their win total tied for second fewest among playoff clubs with the Colorado Avalanche.
Lol Daniel Sprong was a healthy scratch in Wilkes-Barre the other night, classic.
Cal Clutterbuck is a dick and I am already unhappy.
Speaking of Clutterbuck, he was in our bracket before he got bounced by Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara.
